Fully weaned Lovebirds

These babies are between the age of eight and nine weeks. They are all beautiful and healthy and ready for their forever homes.

I've been using a new nutrition program for my birds for the last few months.

Healthy eating and a varied diet has always been my focus.

Fresh vegetables, brown rice, pasta, sprouted seeds and legumes make up a big part of the birds' daily diet. Commercially available bird formulas including seed, pellets, avicakes, nutriberries and spray millet are also fed to the birds every day.

Recently I have started using herbal mixtures and nutritional supplements both on the parents before egg laying and on the babies in their formula. The results have been amazing. The parents of these babies laid six eggs. They were all big and pearly white. All six eggs hatched and survived. This is a first for us. The babies were all a good size from the start and they all feathered up earlier than usual. The feathers , feet eyes, and black on the beaks were more vivid in colour than I've seen before. They also fledged early.

It's been very interesting to watch this happen.

Three Little Lovebirds

Three little ones are hangin' out on the deck. It's so warm outside and we needed a little fresh air. It looks like the two oldest of this clutch are Dutch Blues and the littlest one is Australian Cinnamon. They can't fly yet so it's still pretty easy to take them outside. These babies are starting to eat some solids so we are working on the weaning process.

Spa Day for Lovebird Babies

After their first real bath these babies are wrapped all cozy in their "towels" and put back in their warm brooder. They must have been feeling good as they stayed that way-cocooned-for about an hour. Then they emerged all nice and fluffy.

All four babies are doing well so far. I discovered - at 6:00 am -today that the third baby to hatch has red eyes! The oldest two look to be pied. The youngest is dark and the only one with black on his beak.

November babies two-three weeks old

I just wanted to say that for anyone who buys one of these November babies and would rather not have them come home until after Christmas - I will be happy to hang onto them until then. I have over thirty birds here who need feeding and care every day...even Christmas. It is my pleasure to do so. I have a routine. It is not a rigid routine but I stick loosely to a feeding schedule.
A word of advise on that: Though a bird needs feeding and water changes and playing with every day, it is best not to do these things at exactly the same time every day. Here's why - if your bird is used to getting these things at the same time always and - for whatever reason you will not be able to provide that suddenly- it will be very upsetting to the bird. Also if your bird is used to having the exact same dishes put in the exact same place in the cage always a) that's pretty boring for your little buddy and b) the dish breaks or wears out or whatever and your fid (feathere kid) has never eaten out of anything but his"red" dish (or yellow or ceramic or whatever) then you may have a problem. Change it up. Move dishes around and use different ones if possible. Let the bird go foraging. In nature they must do this. I have collected many little ceramic dishes from kitchen stores,dollar store, China Town etc. They are sold as sauce dishes and are all very different. My finches like eating out of flat dishes so sometimes I use little ceramic thingies that are meant to put used tea bags on sit or spoon holders. You can use plastic or metal too. I just like the pretty little ceramic dishes. They clean up very nicely too which is sometimes more difficult with plastic. I have lots of spares so I can just collect everyone's dish and replace it with a clean full one. Then I throw all the used ones in the dish washer.

These babies are sooooooooooo sweet. They were hand fed from only a few days old. .. at first every three hours.

The mother bird layed seven eggs so the nest was rather crowded. I have included a picture of the parents - mommy dilute yellow and daddy a beautiful pasel green. Both of these birds have a lovely gentle nature too.

The oldest three babies were pulled and then a day later baby number four was pulled(pictured with the penny in older post). They were all very tiny but such little troopers. They really caught on to the feeding and grew so fast. I handled the babies often every day. It was a very enjoyable experience for me. As a result they are very friendly and calm and they really love to be held.

At about three and a half weeks we started introducing solid foods. They absolutely loved Avi-cakes - and still do. We also fed broccoli,corn peas, beans and dried cereals(rice krispies,cheerios and muesli) Their diet also includes seeds, brown rice, pasta and sprouted seeds and beans, and pellets. This keeps them very healthy and it's fun trying new foods with them.

My babies are raised in the main part of my home and are used to lots of different sounds and people. They are quite comfortable with all the household noises - vacuum cleaner, dish washer stereo, piano and various musical intruments and a dog barking.

I'm hoping to find loving homes for these two(two are already sold). They will need daily attention in order to keep their beautiful gentle temperament.
